Work with me.
I believe that writing and showing up for your creative self is necessary, vital and transformative work.

And yet it can feel almost impossible some days to create or to cultivate the right environment for creative work.

Days when we’re full of doubt thinking our stories and our voices don’t matter. Days when we can’t seem to access the work easily or with as much joy as we did before. Days when the world tells us creating and nourishing ourselves through our writing isn’t as important or necessary as other work we could be doing.
Writing can be hard, messy and chaotic. We often feel lost, questioning what we’re creating and how.

I understand that struggle.

After being told as a child that I couldn’t be a writer, I spent two decades trying to do anything but the work that was most central and necessary to me.

Even after returning to writing and starting an MFA in Creative Writing, I was filled with doubt about the value of what I was doing and whether my work would find a place in the world.

I judged my process, always feeling that the ways of working that felt most instinctual to me were wrong and didn’t align with common writing advice. I also struggled with feedback and critiques that were supposedly about making my fiction and plays “better”—more publishable or producible—but which in no way centered my vision or what I was trying to explore through my writing.
It was only once I learned to trust in my unique ways of working and take ownership of the feedback process that I really found belief in my own process and creative work, and I want the same for you.

What did you want to write before the world told you that type of story or character or perspective didn’t matter?

How did you create before the world told you that wasn’t the “right” way to do it?

What was most alive in your work before it was shared with the wrong people, the ones whose feedback made you strip out the parts that felt most true?

Working through self-doubt and blocks in your process means taking back your power, truth and intuitive ways of working from creative environments that may have stripped that from you.
In my work as a writing teacher and coach, I help you embrace your unique vision and ways of working so you can create from a place of belief and produce your truest, most authentic and transformative work.

Each artist has a unique voice and intention, but they also have a unique process, and I can guide you to reconnect with both the why and how of your creative work.

Whether you’re a new or experienced writer, I can support you in further developing a specific manuscript by exploring your intentions for the project and offering feedback and questions to further that intention. I will also help you work through blocks in your process and build a sustainable creative practice that is grounded in the best ways of working for you so that your writing feels more possible and present.

The creative process asks so much of us, including working in a state of surrender and uncertainty, so it’s not surprising that sometimes along that path we can lose ourselves and our belief in what we’re doing and the methods we’re using to create. Let me help you find the way back to yourself.
"Heather Debling is the perfect coach. She possesses the insight of a great writer and the tact and grace of a person who genuinely cares about your success. After Penguin Random House published my memoir to critical acclaim, I felt pressure to follow it up with a success. Heather's wise comments, rigorous attention to detail and encyclopedic knowledge of writing tools, blogs and books, books, books were invaluable. She provided the kind of useful, actionable insights that immediately impacted my revision process and helped my book soar. My highest recommendation!"

"As a former student of Heather's during an undergraduate creative writing course, I highly recommend working with her. When reviewing my short stories, her thoughtful, in-depth feedback always showed a deep respect and understanding for the story I was trying to tell. I was struggling to create a focused narrative, and ended up trying to do too much within a single short story. Rather than providing prescriptive, rigid edits, Heather asked questions and provided suggestions that caused me to think more deeply about what I really wanted to convey through my writing, which helped to focus my stories. I saw strong, noticeable changes between my workshop drafts and final portfolio, and I have taken Heather's advice with me in all my writing since completing her course."
- Julianna Suderman
"When I came to Heather with a collection of my 20 song ideas and a desire to weave them into a captivating fictional story, she met me where I was at the time: a complete novice who barely knew what the word protagonist meant. Some weeks she’d give me reading assignments but most weeks I came with a stack of questions which she tackled one at a time with honesty and creativity. Today, I have finished my first draft at 103,000 words and I’m excited to begin the edit stage … with her help."
- DARRYL A. EVANS | @darryl.a.evans
"I have never felt safer to be completely myself as person and as a writer than I do when I am working with Heather. Heather always meets me exactly where I am. She knows how to make the writing better while holding space for the writer.  She challenges, nudges the work forward and gives very helpful and clear feedback, without ever losing sight of your needs and vulnerabilities as a person. She is kind, thoughtful, insightful and knowledgeable. You will not find a better coach."

"In 2018, I was writing a very emotionally triggering short play about PTSD, titled 'After the Sirens', as experienced by a first responder. I knew after Heather read my first working draft, she understood the peril of (my) characters' struggle; as Heather's investment and care for my character, immediate. What Heather didn't know, is what I also didn't know at the time; which was: what was the inciting incident that tipped the scales for the character into (her) place of no return...Working with Heather provided me clarity, and gave me the confidence to proceed with both caution and conviction, to delve deeply into dark places, while finding levity and humility in both the writing and the process, a fine balance, given the subject. Heather's warmth, compassion, patience and overall objectivity, helped cradle and ground me, and my work."

"Your encouragement on the parts of my CNF piece that were working inspired me to keep on believing in the idea of what I wanted to say, as well as how to say it. I am humbled and grateful for the depth and wisdom of your comments. As for the elements of the piece that were not quite working, the questions you posed allowed me to step back and see the writing with fresh eyes - to take it from a raw and exciting idea to a more polished piece that has a chance at publication. Warm, generous and honest are the words that come to mind when I think about working with you. Thank you, Heather!"

1:1 Writing + Creative Process Coaching
One-on-one coaching to work through creative blocks in your process or to nurture your current writing projects
Whether you’re at the start of a project and feeling overwhelmed about how to begin, or in the messy middle, or nearing the end without a clear sense of what comes next, each step of the creative process presents its own unique challenges and blocks.

Often, we get stuck in familiar but unhelpful patterns, spending more time thinking about the writing and trying to find our way into a project rather than doing the actual work of creation. We feel frustrated, blocked, and unable to do the one thing that we most want to do: create.

What we need in those moments is someone outside of ourselves to listen, to witness, and to guide us to more generative and sustainable ways of creating.

In one-on-one coaching sessions, I can help you:
  • Discover the root causes of your creative blocks and help you reclaim your creative voice and power.
  • Explore what makes your creative process unique and develop a reliable creative practice that sets you and your writing free.
  • Discuss new possibilities and ideas for your project in a safe, supportive and generative space.
  • Develop a big-picture plan for a project and provide accountability throughout the creation phase.
  • Talk through different structure possibilities or an outline for your current work-in-progress.
  • Delve into writing craft topics with a spirit of curiosity and intention.
  • Re-connect with the heart of a particular project or your creative process if you’re feeling confused, lost, or stuck in your process.

Developmental Manuscript Evaluations
Big-picture, intention-focused, craft-infused feedback on your work-in-progress
Sharing our work is a vulnerable experience—and I know first-hand how the wrong type of feedback can block our work on a specific project or even prevent us from creating altogether.

And yet feedback is also a necessary part of the creative process. Sometimes we don’t know where to go next or we’re too close to really see a piece clearly anymore. We know there’s more work to do, but we’re not certain what that work is. We end up feeling lost and even discouraged, even questioning why we started working on this project in the first place.

At those points, an outside perspective can be exactly what you need. The right reader can clarify your initial impulses for writing the piece. They can provide insights and questions that make you excited to work on the project again, while also helping you craft a deeper, more engaging narrative. They can help re-connect with the heart of your current work-in-progress and also to the larger questions and themes at the core of all your creative work so you’re creating from a truly authentic place.

In my experience, having been through the MFA workshop experience, having worked with other editors, coaches, and dramaturges, and also having studied different models of feedback and critique, I know that the most useful and transformative feedback empowers the creator, so clarifying and developing your intention for the piece will always be at the centre of our work together. I offer manuscript evaluations for:
  • Short stories
  • Novels
  • Creative non-fiction
  • Plays
What’s included:
  • You’ll receive developmental feedback on your manuscript through a detailed letter, as well as comments within the manuscript itself on big-picture craft elements like structure, characterization, point of view, voice, and description.
  • We’ll book a call (45-minutes for shorter works or 90-minutes for longer works) to discuss the feedback, answer any additional questions you have, and start devising a revision plan for your next draft.
  • I’ll offer additional craft suggestions, and recommended resources and readings but will always encourage you to apply those concepts and exercises in ways that are inspirational rather than prescriptive.
I can also provide additional coaching throughout the revision process if you find you need more support to develop your next draft or to work through any blocks that come up while revising.

My goal with these developmental manuscript evaluations is to re-connect you with what’s most exciting about the project and ensure you feel empowered to continue moving forward with your project. As you start your next draft, you’ll have questions that will help you think more deeply about the story you’re trying to tell, feedback that guides you in creating a more engaging narrative, and even more importantly, you’ll be re-connected with the why of both your project and your creative work as a writer, so you can create from a place of belief rather than doubt.
